Pihcintu Multicultural Choir
In support of our mission to build community by strengthening organizations that provide education, the arts, and physical and emotional safety for women, children, and families, Voices from the Heart is pleased to announce a donation to the Portland, ME based Pihcintu Multicultural Choir. Comprised of some 35 immigrant girls from around the globe, the Pihcintu chorus exemplifies our belief in the power of choral singing to nurture, connect, and celebrate. Many of these young women have recently fled war-torn villages or refugee camps, experiencing bloodshed, poverty, famine and persecution. They come from Cambodia, China, Congo, El Salvador, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, Viet Nam, British West Indies, and Zambia.
When She Sings, Her Voice Carries Far
Music producer, musician and songwriter, Con Fullam, founded Pihcintu to ‘let these young women be heard’. Not only does singing with Pihcintu allow them to raise their voices and tell their stories, the singers have formed invaluable bonds, helping them heal, learn to trust, laugh, and hope again.
In existence since 2005, the Pihcintu Multicultural Chorus, has served over 300 girls between the ages of 9 to 24. The chorus has produced an album, sung at the Kennedy Center and National Cathedral in Washington DC, and joined Bono for a concert at the United Nations in support of more and better solutions for refugees and the countries that host them. Pihcintu is an indigenous word from the Passamaquoddy peoples meaning, “When she sings, her voice carries far”. And when these young women sing together, they raise spirits and gladden hearts of every listener.
